Day 151: Why Be Normal?
All my life, I’ve tried to fit in and be accepted by people. As a kid, I often thought that I must have missed out on the class at school that taught you what to do to be normal.
I didn’t like sports growing up but liked to study and read. I daydreamed about far off fantasy places that I had made up.
Now, as an adult, we’re asked to fit into society. Get a job, work hard, raise a family, and yet so many people are depressed and unhappy. People buy things to make them feel happy or numb themselves with alcohol and drugs.
What does “being normal” mean to you?
Why does it matter so much if we fit in?
Today I invite you to celebrate how you are different. Let’s look at our lives and embrace the messiness of who we are.
How am I different? Even writing this post, I want to qualify and make certain that I’m not saying it’s okay for serial killers and the like to think that I’m saying it’s okay to harm people. That’s the kind of person I am. I want to make certain that people understand what I’m saying, and I expect this must be insufferable for my friends and family to deal with. But it’s who I am.
I try to be mindful of my quirks, any personality abrasions that could drive someone up the wall.
I do.
Today though, let’s drop all that and just be happy with who we are. We’re not perfect. We’re perfectly flawed.
That’s something to think about, isn’t it?
Without our flaws, we wouldn’t be the same person.
