Day 136: When You Want to Give Up

There will be days when you will want to give up and feel weak and tired. There will be times when you are looking at the changes in your life and question whether you are on the right path.

As kids, we had hardships and experienced difficult times from our alcoholic and dysfunctional upbringings. We often carry a lot of guilt, pain, and fear that are triggered when we encounter difficult times in the present.

When you feel weak and tired, take time to recharge.

Eat when hungry. Drink when thirsty. Sleep when tired.

Make certain that you are taking time for the basics.

I know that when I hit a challenging time my first instinct is to ramp things up. I work harder, push onward, but that’s not always the best course of action.

Listen to your body. Listen to your heart.

When it’s late at night and you wake up in a sweat and are afraid, give yourself a hug. Tell yourself that you love yourself. Reach out for professional help if you need it.

And be certain to not berate yourself for wanting to give up. Sometimes quitting (a job, an activity, a goal, a relationship) is the healthy thing to do. Only you will know the answer to whether giving up is right for you.

In the midst of a storm, it’s often hard to concentrate and make a clear decision. Sometimes we react instead of act. There’s a big difference between wanting to make a healthy choice and being pushed to make a rash one.

Give yourself the space, time, and room to reflect on your course of action.

Life can be hard.

What you decide to do with the time given to you, is up to you.

No one can live your life for you.

Finding joy, happiness, and love might take time as you work through a difficult time, but you can do it.

How?

Take these steps:

  1. Love yourself.

  2. Give yourself the basics (sleep, food, water)

  3. See a therapist or other professional.

  4. Choose activities to help build your self-confidence (writing, exercising, painting)

  5. Surround yourself with friends who accept you as you are.

You might not be able to take all the steps at once, but if you make an effort to acknowledge that you want to give up, that’s the first step.
