Day 140: Change Is the Only Constant
It’s a weird thing, but when things are bad, we want things to change as soon as possible. But when life is good, we don’t want to change.
The reality is that there’s always change taking place around us all the time.
I’m writing this during the Coronavirus pandemic, and my state is still sheltering at home. On the news today, Dr. Birx said, “This is the moment not to be going to the grocery store.”
Billions of people around the world went from going to our jobs, school, and all sorts of places to suddenly having our entire lives thrown in disarray.
Change. It’s hard.
People’s lives are at stake, and the virus is spreading throughout the world. I’ve seen the cases in my home state go from just a few dozen to more than 11,000 in a few short weeks.
The change that we’re all being asked to accept is life-changing and historical. Billions of people from around the world are being asked to stay at home to help flatten the curve.
When you read this, you’ll know what happened after this period. I can’t know what the future will bring, and I’ll be honest with you: I’m afraid of all this change.
Millions have lost their jobs, hundreds of thousands are sick in the United States, and we don’t know when we’ll be through all this. We only know that we’ve been asked to shelter at home until the end of April 2020.
What I find encouraging is that now is a perfect time to focus on learning new skills and embracing techniques to help us learn how to deal with stress and anxiety.
The change we’re all going through is happening so fast that I think it’s really hard to take all of this in.
But change is the only constant.
As much as we might want certain things to last forever, that’s not possible.
No matter how much we get angry or try to stop the change, we can’t stop the world from moving on.
I wish it would be easier for me to let it go. To let go. To just accept that I need to be flexible like a tree in the wind.
But I fear that if I were to bend too much, that what makes me special and unique will be lost.
I’m being vulnerable with you because I’d like you to see that you are not alone. Change can be hard.
It can be messy and might come when you least expect or want it.
I wish I had a way to help you get through a difficult time of change, but I don’t.
What I do know is this: When change hits you hard (like what so many of us are dealing with during the Coronavirus pandemic), talk to people how you feel.
Shine a light on your feelings and be open to sharing.
Repression and denial won’t get you anywhere.
Say what you’re afraid of and be honest.
Open up, share it with those you trust and love, and you’ll be okay.
Yes, it’s going to take time.
How long?
I don’t know. But it will happen.
