Day 164: Do One Nice Thing for Yourself

Are you hard on yourself? Are you struggling with your journey? Do you wish that all of the hardships would end?

At the time that I am writing this, more than 30 million Americans have filed for unemployment due to quarantine orders from the Coronavirus. People are suffering. I hope, and I pray that when you read this, there will be better news. My little time capsule is just a floating bottle in a massive ocean.

No matter if you read this while we’re all still dealing with the pandemic or years afterward, I would like you to do something today: What one nice thing can you do for yourself?

What would that be?

Would you go on a nice walk? Take a hot bath? Sit on a step and listen to the birds chirping outside?

Would you call someone you love and tell them that? Or hug yourself?

There are may things that you can do that would be nice and comforting for yourself.

Maybe your first reaction was to buy something for yourself? Sure, that’s an option, but I have found that material possessions only bring a fleeting sense of joy.

Experiences, however, are something entirely different as the memories we create around them help to fortify us during difficult times.

What is it that I miss the most right now as my family and I are in quarantine?

Honestly, I miss giving my mother a big hug. I’ve spoken to her every day on the phone, and I go to visit her by standing outside her house as we practice social distancing.

One of the first things that I would want to when (when it’s safe) is to visit my mother and hug her.

But I cannot do that today. Having gone food shopping, I could put my mother at risk as I’ve had interactions with people outside my home. With more than 62,000 people have died from COVID-19 since early March, I do not wish to risk my mother’s health.

Patience and calm are in order.

So, as I deal with worry about the struggles that we’re all going through during the pandemic, I am thinking about the little things in life. What is one nice thing that you could do for yourself today?

For me, I think I’m going to treat myself and take a walk outside (ensuring that I practice social distancing). I’d like to feel the sun (if it comes out) on my face, smell the fresh flowers outside, and breathe in Spring that’s in the air.

The best gift I can give myself today is acceptance and love. I’m living in a difficult time. It’s going to take time to adjust to all of these changes. So, in the meantime, what nice thing could we do each day for ourselves?

For today, what would that be?
