Day 278: Flowing Like a River

Yesterday my family and I went tubing out on the river with another family. Each of us sat in our round tube and floated down the Delaware River.

At one point, the river split into two paths. Two members of our group went left and the rest of us stayed right. I was in the group that went right. I had tried to go left, but the current was too strong.

I kicked, I paddled, but to no avail.

The current pulled us to the right.

For about 30 minutes we went our way, and eventually, our path merged back up with the left one and our group came all back together again.

There were a few times during the day that I spent a tremendous amount of energy trying to get my tube in position to where I wanted to go. But in the end, the current all brought us to the finish line just the same.

While floating out on the river, I at first thought about the dangers of the water. The current, the depth of the water, and I worried that I might get lost from the group.

But those concerns were unfounded because the river’s depth wasn’t more than 4-5 feet deep. All any of us needed to do was to jump off our tube, stand up, and walk across the river and we’d be fine.

When I realized that the river wasn’t that deep and that we would all be fine, I laughed because I realized that sometimes in life I kick, flail, and fight hard to get to another position. I resist and try to move when there isn’t really a need to move.

Sometimes it’s okay just to float down the river of life because we’re headed in the right direction that our higher power has provided for us. Sometimes we need to let go and accept that the path we’re headed will turn out fine.

Maybe today is one of those days for you?
