Day 194: Rage

To mark this time, let me share with you what is happening in my world. The county in my state is still under the shelter at home order that the Governor issued back in late March. It’s now June. The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 100,000 people in America. And last night, more than a dozen states had violent protests due to a copy kneeling on the neck of George Floyd for 8 minutes and 46 seconds until Mr. Floyd died. Peaceful protests have been happening across America but the last few nights the violence has soared. The videos I’m seeing on Twitter is frightening. We are in the middle of a pandemic still and people are out in the streets with such rage.

Day 193: Taking Stock When You Hurt Someone's Feelings

We all make mistakes. And if we have any relationships, we will at some point hurt someone else’s feelings. If you go back and remember how problems were resolved in your alcoholic or dysfunctional family, you might see patterns arise. Instead of admitting wrong, someone in the family may have become defensive, and then went on the offense. Fights, yelling, and unresolved conflicts are common in dysfunctional families.

I don’t know when you will read this. I’m still in quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic and I’ve been using meditation, podcasts, self-help books, and visualizations to help me get through this difficult time.

In an article in the Washington Post this week, the Census Bureau has found that “a third of Americans now show signs of clinical anxiety or depression.” We are going through a difficult time and we do not know when the difficult times will end.

To achieve our goals, we need to believe that we can. If I were to say that I will become a best-selling author, I need to back that up with belief. As adults who grew up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional family, believing in ourselves can be hard. We may have been let down by our parents or guardians and lost hope in having a stable family.

What we do today is what counts.

I grew up in an alcoholic/dysfunctional family and my perceptions of reality became skewed. Over time, I dreamed big, but my dreams would be knocked down to size.

I wanted to be a novelist when I was a kid. And if I couldn’t be that, I wanted to be an astronomer. As I grew older, I spent time writing to escape the world around me. And one Christmas, my mom purchased me a small telescope. I cherished that tiny red telescope. I’d set it out on the roof of my grandfather’s car and stare up at the moon or at Jupiter.

We live in uncertain times. But the truth is that we have always lived in uncertain times. In my lifetime, there’s been wars, the Cold War, 9/11, the Great Recession, and now the coronavirus pandemic. We cannot see tomorrow and if we live in fear then we can become paralyzed and fearful of taking risks.

When I was in graduate school, I asked a bunch of my friends to come to see me read some of my work at a poetry night at a local bookstore. One by one, my friends dropped out and let me know that they couldn’t make it.

Day 184: Make It Work

I learned yesterday that the county that I live has had a fairly steady Coronavirus count for the last few weeks. Unfortunately, it appears that my county’s orders for quarantine will need to be extended. Add on top of that, that 2.4 million more Americans filed for unemployment this past week that brings the total to more than 38 million American have filed for unemployment benefits over the last nine weeks.

And we’re crossed, 93,000 deaths from the virus in American with more than 1.5 million cases.

Day 183: Change the Page

I had some intense dreams last night. Several times in those dreams, I raised my hand, put it up against a window while looking out at the scene below, and said, “Change the page.” The scene shifted, and I found myself in a calmer state.

Lots of people are talking about the intense dreams they’re having during the Coronavirus pandemic, and I can relate to that. I’m under a lot of stress and am here to help share with you what’s working for me.

Day 182: Learn Something New

I don’t know if it’s because I’m an introvert or what, but I don’t think I’ve been bored in a long time. The journey of self-discovery is life-long, and there are plenty of paths to take.

I am still shocked to hear that so few Americans read a book a year. Some people have told me that they haven’t read a book since they graduated high school.
