Don’t like what’s on TV? Turn it off and make your movie.
Feel oppressed at your job? Get another one.
Sick of the same old type of books out in the store? Write a new one.
Disgusted with the news and how everything looks horrible? Volunteer and make a difference in the world.
It’s easy to point the finger and say “that is wrong,” but power is self-given. No one is going to come up to you, give you the scepter of might, and say, “You now have the power to go take on the world.”
That’s not how life works.
But it’s funny how we wait for change as though we’re not able to be part of making change happen.
I know that I’ve been guilty of a helpless or victim mindset. I have gone through situations and felt powerless to make a change.
The reality is that there are gradations of what can and cannot be changed.
Our role is to recognize what we can change and do it. We can’t change how other people feel or what they do. We can try and even work on manipulation and control, but in the long run, we will have lost because those people will eventually catch on to us and leave us.
Better to be honest, open, and work on what you can address in yourself.
If you want to exercise, take small steps to do that. Saying that you don’t have enough hours in the day, frankly, is an excuse. I’ve heard fellow indie authors (who are the mother of several children) tell their stories of writing books and how they make time in their lives.
Is it easy?
No.
Will sacrifices need to be made?
Sometimes, yes.
Maybe TV has to be turned off, or you get up an hour earlier.
But I would ask you this: What is holding you back?
What dream have you always wanted to try, but you’ve let slip by because “you don’t have the time” or “you’re not ready yet.”
See what’s around you, pick one thing, and make a difference to do good.
When we point at others or situations for holding us back, we’re not allowing ourselves the opportunity to grow.
Yes, it can be scary. And yes, growing can be scary.
But the alternative is far, far worse.
