Day 118: Laughter Cures the Soul

There are snapshots in time that you can look back on and remember. Times where you laughed, had some fun and could be your true self without fear or worry.

The stress of work and the rest of your life could pull you down if you let it.

But laughter can be soothing and a balm for the soul.

Have you made time to laugh recently?

When I look back at my early childhood, I don’t recall many times when I laughed and felt free. The alcoholic/dysfunctional upbringing that I grew up in sucked the joy right out of life. I remember being afraid and always being in a state of vigilance.

But those days are long gone now.

Today is not yesterday.

What can you do today to experience joy and have some fun?

What makes you laugh?

I don’t know why but I’ve always been partial to British humor. I love Monty Python and grew up watching a lot of ‘70s shows from the UK. These TV shows were on our local PBS station, and I still crack a smile when I see Monty Python’s dead “Parrot Sketch.”

In a world where we’re moving so quickly, and the news cycle is changing by the hour, what makes you laugh?

And are you making time to let your guard down to smile and be funny?

Each April 1st, my kids like to play simple April fools jokes, and it’s funny to see how excited they get. The joy they experience in pulling off a harmless prank on their parents is funny for me to see.

When they were younger, we used to take part in the Elf on the Shelf tradition. Each night my wife or I would take the Elf and put him in a funny position. One night I had him on a zipline in the kitchen. Another time my wife put the elf on the toilet in the bathroom to make it look like he was going to the bathroom we also put him in a glass bowl with tiny marshmallows, so it looked like he was in a hot tub.

Simple and funny things in life can help heal you and get you to see the larger world around you.

What can you do today to relax a bit and to laugh? What causes you to have a great, big belly laugh?

Go experience that.

It’s okay to have some fun.

Give yourself permission to do so.
