Day 187: When You're Stuck

Ever feel like you’re stuck and can’t get out of a bad situation? No matter what you try, you feel like you’re spinning your wheels but can’t find a solution.

I’m currently feeling that way and it is demoralizing.

To help me get through this difficult time, I’m going back through my life and remembering some past problems that I’ve had to deal with and think through the solutions. Some of what I’ve done in the past may help me solve the problem of today.

But even beyond that, having hope that the problem that you’re going through won’t last forever is helpful.

While on my long run today, I thought back to some problems I had with a particular person and smiled because it had been so long that I couldn’t even remember all the details of the problem.

Though I might feel like I’m in the thick of things, the situation will eventually change.

The problem that I currently have is that the stress I’m under triggers a lot of negative memories from my childhood and how I felt powerless to help myself. I felt trapped in an unhealthy situation and used my imagination to write stories that helped me survive those dark times.

What I keep reminding myself is that I have the power to not be drowned out by the problems I’m going through. I can change my situation and to choose how I feel about the problem. Yes, I’m struggling with worry and doubt, but I’m working hard to deal with those feelings. When I admit to feeling upset and have anxiety over the problem, that helps to free me. If I were to suppress my feelings, that would only make things worse for me.

I am also focusing on positivity and moving forward. I keep trying, learning, and applying different solutions to the problem. Yes, it’s taking me longer to solve the issue than I had hoped, but I’m working hard to keep trying.

When you feel stuck, what do you typically do to solve the problem? If that’s not working to help you get through the challenging time, I would also recommend speaking to someone you love and trust. Often people who have different personality types that we do can see solutions where we can’t. I’ve had that happen before. Cast your net wide and talk to people to help brainstorm solutions. You’re not looking for someone to solve your problem for you, but advice on how best to solve the problem.

When the problem becomes so overwhelming and you can’t go on, take a moment to breathe and relax.

Gather your strength, meditate or pray, get some rest and then come back at the problem but look at the issue from a different perspective. If the solutions you keep trying to us aren’t working, modify your responses. If the battering ram can’t break down the door, become the water that will flow under it.

You will prevail. You will need to believe in yourself and have patience. Both can be hard to have during a difficult time.

When stuck, rest and pause, but don’t give up.
