Day 289: Stay the Course

Yesterday I listened to Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us podcast and in the first episode of her second season, she spoke about “Day 2.” She defines “day 2” as the second day of a big conference—the day when you’re getting into the hard work. The fun time is over and you need to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Brown discussed how she thinks we’re in “day 2” with the coronavirus pandemic. We’re tired of dealing with the pandemic and we’re looking to get back to how things used to be. We’re tired of restrictions and want to move on.

Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works.

With our journey of self-healing and overcoming the challenges we dealt with in growing up in an alcoholic and dysfunctional family, right now we’re in “day 2” as well.

The message that I want to share with you is one of positivity: stay the course.

Keep learning, reading, exploring, and sharing.

Now is the time to accept that growth can be messy and complicated. Overcoming abuse and trauma takes time and effort.

You will get tired. You will want to quit. And I expect that you’ll say that all the work that you’re doing is hard and you’re tired.

Voice those opinions, share them (either in your journal, with a therapist, or a trusted friend), and embrace where you stand.

Today I want to give you hope that there’s no shortcut toward growth. It will feel messy and complicated, but I believe you can do it.

Stay the course.

You’re worth it.
