If we know what will be good for us, why do we resist? Why would we ignore good advice and not take our medicine?
Could it be that change is hard? Maybe it’s because we’re afraid? Maybe we’re comfortable with how our lives are right now?
The answers to why we don’t take steps to help ourselves can be complicated.
Shaming or being angry at yourself is not going to help you.
If you’re not ready to take the next step or you actively are subverting your own growth or healing, stop. Take time to relax, focus on why you’re feeling the way you do, and talk about it with someone.
Staying in the shadows and not wanting to shine a light on your fears is the easier path. It takes courage to stand up and move forward.
Before you go further on your recovery journey, take time to feel what you’re feeling. Take time to understand why you’re acting the way you do. And then take steps to let that go. How?
Talk with a therapist, write out your feelings in a journal passage, talk with a trusted friend, and then let the feelings go.
When you have a cure or medicine to take, but you’re not able to take that step, pretending all is okay and moving forward isn’t going to solve your problem.
It’s only going to make it worse.
Stop, take stock, and relax.
