Day 359: Reflect in Silence

Silence doesn’t always have to be a bad thing. I’ve seen people have silence ruin their lives as parents turned the other way to sexual abuse, or ignore addiction or abusive behavior, or refuse to say “I love you” when a child simply needed to feel like they belong.

But silence doesn’t have to be a weapon.

Silence can also open doors to places and people you might never have thought possible.

I find that I’m always on the go and there is an endless amount of media to cloud my thoughts. There are thousands of podcasts, millions of songs, and more hours to watch TV or YouTube than I will ever be able to get to.

I encourage you to take time each day for silence. To sit with your thoughts, go for a walk without your phone, take a hike in the woods and listen to nature and all she has to offer.

During the early stages of the pandemic, when my state was first locked down, I would spend some time outside before work, and since it was springtime, I got to see a robin create a nest right by my back window. Each morning she would fly away to get food for her chicks and I could see them stretch their long necks with their becks open, waiting for their mother to give them food.

The sound of the wind that blew through the trees and the morning sun on my face brought an awareness to me about my life, feelings, fears, and dreams. By listening, I realized that there isn’t as much silence around me as I expected. Even in a quiet room, there’s the ticking of a clock, hum of a refrigerator, or the rumble of a car going by outside.

The less noise I heard, the more I can in contact with how I felt that day. If I felt sad, I allowed myself to feel that.

What if you take time for the thoughts rushing through your head? What would you be able to work out if you just gave yourself the time to do so?

By listening to the silence, you might be surprised to learn that there’s been a voice inside all the time and that when you allow the space for you to grow and be at peace, great things can happen.

Silence can be a blessing if you allow it.
