Day 185: The Law of Attraction

Question what I share with you. Do not take everything I say as Gospel. Why would I say this to you? I believe it’s important that I share the truth with you. What might work for me, may not work for you. And today, I’m going to talk about the Law of Attraction (or LOA as some call it).

Many years ago, I kept hearing people talk about The Secret.

I went about my life and kept hearing how people were following “The Secret” and they were getting riches and all the things that they want in life.

My BS detector went up on hearing this and learned that the big secret behind the book named The Secret is that it's a retelling of the Law of Attraction. In a nutshell, the Law of Attraction can be summed up as: If you think positive thoughts, then positive things will happen to you.

I don’t have any problem with that and I like the idea behind it. If I think negative thoughts all the time, I create a vicious cycle of negativity and I’ll get caught in a loop and not be able to achieve my goals.

If I were trying to finish writing a book and kept thinking that I wasn’t good enough and couldn’t complete it, then I’d have a tough time finishing.

But where the Law of Attraction breaks down for me is that, you’re supposed to use the power of positive thought to manifest positive outcomes. The history behind the Law of Attraction is well worth reading up on if you’re interested. The idea has been around since the 19th century and been repackaged in many different books over the years.

What I believe is this: Yes, I believe it’s important to be positive. But the key difference is that I also know that thinking positively isn’t going to magically bring me the things I want. If I want to run a marathon, I need to do the training. If I want to write books, I have to put in the hard work of writing and marketing my those books.

Many people are out there to sell you a solution, a cure, and a way of life. Heck, I’m trying to sell my books too. I get it that I might sound like a hypocrite.

When you go about your day, I hope you question things.

I believe in science and God. That might sound like a paradox but here’s the thing. I have no way of proving that God exists. My taking a leap of faith and believe in God can be compared to others believing in the Law of Attraction.

What I believe is questioning what you believe. There are many people out there looking to take your money and your time to get you to believe what they believe.

My message to you is: I hope you think for yourself.
