I make time for my family, work, for volunteering, watching TV, writing books, and a whole host of other things. But am I making time to commit to myself? For today, are we making time to commit to do the work we need to do to help us live a healthier life?
How much time and effort do we spend on others?
Do we focus on our family and work, but have so little time for ourselves?
Or are we focusing on ourselves, but only the shallow aspects of life?
What is it that we want today? Money, fame, beauty.
Those things are great, but what about feeling a sense of peace, happiness, and joy in our lives?
The work that we need to do each day is foundational because it sets us up for a better tomorrow.
Let’s break the work down so that you can see what needs to be done. When we work on ourselves and commit to doing that work, it allows us to build healthy habits.
Start small.
Pick one area to focus on and then follow up on that work each and every day.
If you spend 15 minutes each morning on listening to a meditation app, setting that habit into motion can help build a positive skill for you that will carry over into other areas of your life.
Think of things this way: Sometimes you need a screwdriver. Other times you need a paring knife.
The work that you need to do might seem overwhelming and confusing.
When I started out, I decided to focus on building positive habits that would help me.
On my journey, I broke the work down into these areas:
Therapy and counseling.
Education (self-help books and podcasts)
For the mind: Meditation, mindfulness, and journaling
For the body: Exercise, eating right, and sleep.
For the soul: Music, art, laughter, and love.
The choice that you have to make is seeing all this as a chore or exciting and fun.
If you’ve not gone to therapy before, the work that needs to be done there can be challenging. The good news is that the journey you are embarking and committing yourself to takes time and that’s a good thing.
Commit yourself today to your future. Commit to your happiness and joy.
One day at a time.
