It’s okay to feel lost. If you are starting the journey and have a lot of outside problems affecting you, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Take some time to slow down, allow yourself to process how you feel, and then let your feelings wash over you.
There could be many emotions going through you at the same time. The path forward might also be unclear.
When you stop, process, and allow yourself to feel, it’s helpful to work through your feelings. Repression is not going to work in the long run. And neither will escapism.
Drinking alcohol, doing drugs, throwing yourself into one stands, or using food to try to soothe your feelings are all common ways that people try to numb their feelings. As tempting as it might seem to escape for a little while, we still need to process how we’re feeling.
Why are we feeling lost? Do you feel wronged? Angry at yourself for missed opportunities? Be sure to give yourself the space and time to explore your feeling. Going to a therapist can help you as you work through your feelings and problems.
When I feel lost, I exercise, talk with my friends and loved ones, and write. When problems have gotten so overwhelming for me, I’ve gone to a therapist. There is no shame in getting help.
Another activity that I like to use when I feel lost is to sit in silence with nature. I like to spend some time alone, listen to the birds, and the wind blowing in the trees, and just be.
Most of my life I’m rushing around to work hard, make a work deadline, help with the kids, pay bills, or do chores. Being overworked and exasperated from all that’s going on in your life is another way of numbing oneself from your feelings.
When feel lost, reach out to your support network (your friends and family) and carve out some time to sit with your feelings.
Just like the stages of grief, overcoming grief is a complicated process that takes time. The same is true when you feel lost and overwhelmed.
Be easy on yourself. Give yourself a hug, sit still, and listen. If you cannot stop your racing thoughts, reach out for help. You deserve it.
