Day 256: You Are Needed Here Right Now

I stopped at the red light, scanned the surrounding area, and took a moment to relax. I had dropped my mom off at home after we had a socially distant lunch. My mom doesn’t drive, so I picked her up and she sat in the back seat with her mask on, I drove with my mask on, and I had the windows down. I prayed that I didn’t have the coronavirus and that the precautions we took would be enough.

As I waited for the red light to turn green, I listened to the latest episode of Cathy Heller’s Don’t Keep Your Day Job podcast and Cathy said, “If you’re here right now, then you are needed.”

A great well of emotion surged up in my heart and her words hit home.

When you feel lost, tired, and not sure how to handle all the stress, what do you do?

I know that I’ve often fallen into old dysfunctional patterns that I learned as a kid. I either took on way too much responsibility or withdrew and closed emotionally like a clam. My responses have been reactionary because I took what I had learned from surviving an alcoholic/dysfunctional upbringing and did the best I could.

But what if we stop and think about why we are here. Each of us is beautiful and has gifts to share with the world. We are here and the world desperately needs us.

What if we show up for ourselves today, look at ourselves in the mirror, and take responsibility for our actions? If we want joy and love, then we can have them. Give first to ourselves (set the foundation and make it solid) and then give to others.

After you give yourself the self-care and love you need, where are you needed right now? Figure that out, roll up your sleeves, and go to work.
