There are many types of lies that we tell ourselves over the course of our lifetime. We might wish to think that the problems in front of us are actually not truly there.
What do I mean?
If you grew up in an alcoholic family, how do you handle being around the family member who drank?
Do you pretend that all is fine? Do you look the other way when that person drinks to excess at a holiday dinner?
As we become older, the family ties that hold us together can become more complicated. I’ve seen friends take into their homes their alcoholic parent because of their advanced age and how an act of kindness eats away at the family.
How do we handle the problems that we come up against?
Are we lying to ourselves to make things easier?
Do we look the other way when confronted we problems?
We all have a choice to make each day. We can pretend that everything is okay (when it’s truly not) or we can address our problems.
Looking the other way and pretending not to see the problems happening all around us will not help resolve the issues.
But not many of us like confrontation.
If you want to be free, then we need to come clean and be honest with whom we are, what we want in life, and how we want to live our lives.
The best way to start is to focus on today. Reach out for help if you need it. Talk with a therapist if you’re struggling. You’re not alone.
