Day 242: Flip the Switch

Day 242: Flip the Switch

As I go about my day, my brain starts telling me stories. Let’s see if any of these ring a bell for you:

  • Things are going to be a lot harder than what you’re planning for.

  • This challenge you’re up against is really hard.

  • You’re not special.

I have many years that I spent as a kid trying to figure out what “normal” was and trying to compare my family life to those of my friends’.

Day 163: The Power of Positivity

Day 163: The Power of Positivity

I woke up feeling scared. I hadn’t slept well the night before and needed to be at my friend’s house hours before the sun rose. I had somehow agreed to run the Philadelphia marathon. Two years earlier, a simple question had put me on the road to my first marathon. A friend and his wife asked my wife and me: “Would you like our old treadmill?”

The last time I had run more than a mile was back in high school.

Day 91: We Are What We Think

Day 91: We Are What We Think

"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world." Buddha

That’s a nice quote. Though scholars believe that it’s not a quote from Buddha but was a rendering from Thomas Byrom, an Oxford scholar who died in 1991.

Still, no matter who wrote the words, there’s a powerful message there.

Day 17: Make Your Own Success

Day 17: Make Your Own Success

“Nobody loves me.” Or, “they’re all out to get me.” Or better yet: “I can’t get a break.”

Self-fulfilling prophecies are an easy way to build a defensive barrier around ourselves. By putting a negative thought out into the universe, we do so to protect ourselves from when the other shoe hits the ground.
