I have been trapped in “all or nothing” thinking. I think that’s because of the extremes that I went through as a kid. I often felt trapped in a situation that I couldn’t get out of and would get frustrated with my supposed lack of power.

I feel like a failure and am afraid. Or maybe I’m just delusional, and the dreams that I have are just fantasies.
I want to write books, create podcasts, teach through webinars, and share what I have to the world.
You’re an impostor. Anything that you’ve tried to do, you fail, or at best, are mediocre. You’ll never amount to anything.
I hear these thoughts in my head. It’s not all the time, but when I’m tired, frightened, and worried, doubt creeps in and tries to convince me to give up on my dreams.

If you feel stuck, or worse, going round and round in a circle, I hear you. I’ve been there.
One night before my Junior year in college started, I went outside near 2 a.m. and looked up at the sky. I lived with my grandparents, mom, and brother in a small row home. The summer heat had started to fade, but it was still warm enough to be outside in shorts. I stared up at the sky and watched the clouds pass by the moon.

As the oldest child who grew up in an alcoholic/dysfunctional family, I took on a lot of responsibility. I took on the emotional burden of the problems my mother suffered through and needed to find a way to make a path for myself. I threw myself into school, work, and creativity.
I survived by using my imagination to dream up new worlds, creatures, and places.

If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I would tell him to relax more and that all would turn out fine. I spent a lot of time and energy, worrying about the stupidest of things.
I worried about whether I could ever find someone who would love me, worried about dumb things that I had done, and even worried about the happiest I did find.

A few years back I tried to move a big bookcase on my own. I needed to move it about a foot and thought that I could knock it out in a few minutes and be on my way.
I put my weight against the bookcase, struggled with it for a few minutes, and I succeeded.
However, later in the day, a dull backache from moving the bookcase flared up to be so painful that I could barely stand up straight.

What is that most moment that you look back to as a kid that just stays with you?
For me, it’s being a little kid sitting at the table having dinner. My father comes home from work, and he gets upset at what my mom has made. I remember him saying that he worked all day and came home to have a crappy meal.
