Day 321: The Slog

There are going to be times in your life when you hit a rut. If you’re going along trying something new, it’s hard when you hit a rough patch. Seth Godin has written The Dip in which he states that he believes that successful people look for a rough patch, quit something that they’re trying that isn’t working, and move on to something else. You might wonder why I bring up Godin as he’s written books about marketing and business, but his lesson about failure it critical to our own success in life.

In growing up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional family, we learned behaviors that are not successful and might hold us back in life. As we try new things in life: Setting new boundaries, jobs, relationships, and self-care practices, if we apply Godin’s logic to our life, he recommends that when we hit a dip in the road that we drop what isn’t working for us and move on—try another way.

If meditation isn’t working for you, try yoga. If the job you have isn’t fulfilling, find another.

Asking yourself the question on whether something you’re trying is healthy and good for you, is much better than slogging through just to keep moving forward.

That’s a radical statement.

Sometimes we will need to quit and end things: Jobs, relationships, habits. Thinking through what is working for us and what isn’t, makes us accountable for our decisions and who we want to be. We can’t just put ourselves on autopilot, we need to be active participants in our own healing.
