When the world is filled with problems, darkness, and you feel lost, I’d like to share with you a simple visualization technique that you can use to help you during your difficult time.
The good news is that you can use this visualization tip pretty much anywhere.
Find a quiet and safe place to relax for a few minutes. Lie down or sit up in a chair—whatever works best for you.
Close your eyes, take a slow deep breath, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale out your mouth.
Next, imagine a place your favorite place. As an example, I’ll walk you through mine.
I’m standing on the beach with my feet in the wet sand. The sun is low on the horizon and a gentle breeze is blowing. The next ocean wave crashes and washes up the beach to cover my feet with its warmth and a tiny bit of foam. I can feel the slight tickle of sand being pulled back toward the ocean as the wave recedes.
Slowly, I take a deep breath through my nose. As I breathe in, I can smell the full-bodied scent of the dunes, the faint acrid smell of a rotting horseshoe crab that I can see in the distance, and when I lick my lips, I can taste the salt from my sweat.
I hold the breath, count to six, and then exhale through my mouth.
Off in the distance, I see a seagull flying high in the sky, and then without warning, the bird dives and tries to catch, what I guess is a fish, in the ocean.
No one is on this beach but me. I can look, spin around, and I see the sand, ocean, and far off a house with lights on as twilight is fast approaches. Soon I’ll be able to see the first star up above in the sky. I take in the sounds, the tastes, smells, and touch of this spot of mine. No one can harm me when I am here. I am safe, secure, happy, and free.
See?
Now you can use this as an example or make your own visualization that’s more personalized to your favorite spot.
Use this technique to help ground you when you are afraid and need help.
